Understanding elder abuse is the first step toward stopping it.
Abuse can happen at home, in the community or in a care setting. It is not always visible, and many older adults are afraid or unable to speak about what they are experiencing. The Elder Group equips families, caregivers, service providers and community professionals with practical knowledge to identify concerns and take appropriate action.
Physical abuse
Intentional force that causes pain, injury, restraint or physical harm.
Emotional abuse
Threats, humiliation, intimidation, isolation or controlling behavior.
Financial exploitation
Misusing money, property, benefits, accounts or authority for personal gain.
Neglect
Failure to provide necessary food, shelter, hygiene, medication, supervision or care.
Sexual abuse
Any nonconsensual sexual contact or conduct with an older adult.
Abandonment
Deserting an older adult who depends on another person for care or protection.
Self-neglect
When an older adult cannot meet essential needs in ways that threaten health or safety.

Meet our founder
A lifetime of service, rooted in dignity.
Charles L. Peek founded The Elder Group in 2019 to ensure that seniors, veterans and neighbors experiencing hardship are seen, supported and never left to face crisis alone.
His leadership draws on more than two decades of work with people experiencing homelessness and vulnerable families in Norfolk. Through practical assistance, community partnerships and advocacy, Charles has remained focused on protecting older adults, supporting displaced veterans and connecting people with the resources needed to regain stability.
Under his leadership, The Elder Group brings together compassionate service and community-driven solutions—meeting immediate needs while helping people move forward with hope.
